Before deciding to start this blog, I had to determine its name. This was no easy feat, as the title would have to reflect both its content and its author. I finally decided upon “la mise aux points”, which combines both my passion for hand embroidery and the beauty of the French language. So what does it mean? It is what the French would call “un jeu de mots” or play on words. Normally, the expression is “la mise au point”, which according to Larousse means amongst other things, “focusing”, “tuning”, or “adjustment”. However, breaking down the expression, word for word, “mise” means “put” (mettre) and one of the meanings for “point” is stitch. Making this plural “aux points” can also interpret the whole expression as “put to stitches”. I particularly like the plural as it refers to the infinite number of stitches in the various techniques of hand embroidery which I’m learning and employing in my projects. Along with writing in English, I hope to also write in French in order to share my passion with a larger readership.

Avant de commencer ce blog, j’ai dû déterminé son nom. Ceci n’était pas facile puisque le titre devait représenter son contenu ainsi que son auteur. J’ai finalement choisi «la mise aux points», un jeu de mots qui combine ma passion pour la broderie manuelle et la beauté de la langue française. Normalement réservée aux domaines de l’optique, de la photographie, de la technologie ou du sens figuré, cette expression est employée au singulier. Par contre, le mot «point» peut également suggérer en broderie, en couture et en dentelle, selon Larousse, une «unité répétitive de travail d’un ouvrage». J’ai favorisé la mise au pluriel de ce nom puisque cela se réfère au nombre infini de points des techniques variées de la broderie que j’apprends et que j’emploie dans mes projets. J’espère rédiger mes articles en anglais comme en français afin de partager ma passion à un public de lectrices et de lecteurs plus large.
